Day 19: ALIASSE
Game: VALKYRIA CHRONICLES 2
There are arguments that can be made as to whether Valkyria Chronicles 1 or 2 is the better game. As far as mechanics go, I lean more towards 2. Maps have been divided into smaller sections making them less overwhelming, the Sniper class has been folded into the Scout class, simplifying class selection, the new Armored Tech and Fencer classes are much needed defensive additions, it’s just an all-around more polished game mechanically, despite being on the PSP. The story is where it loses me though, replacing the engaging and at times heart-breaking coming of age story from the first game with your standard “High-School kids save world” story so common in anime. Even so, Valkyria Chronicles 2 is a worthy successor to the original and a must have if you own a PSP. Now if Sega would only port it to Steam to join the original.

One thing I’m particularly divided on between the two games is as to which game has the better heroine Valkyrur. When it comes to the Valkyria in general, I will admit that I find game one’s antagonist, Selvaria Bles to be the most interesting, but Alicia isn’t far behind. All she wanted was to be a normal woman, but that possibility was literally shot in the heart when her powers were revealed. The anime does a better job than the game when it comes to conveying the pain she’s going through with the discovery, but it’s clear that she’s divided on how she should use her power. Is she a shield with the power to protect what she holds dear or is she a simple spear used only for destroying the enemy in front of her. It’s interesting and ultimately inspiring to watch her overcome her doubts and blossom into one of my favorite heroines in gaming. Meanwhile, while I’m fonder of Aliasse overall personality wise, it’s tough to deny that she’s not as interesting as a Valkyria. Aliasse never has to go through any sort of arc to accept her powers like Alicia does. She has them from the beginning and she’s more than happy to have them. Only once near the end of the game does the spear or shield narrative I found so interesting with Alicia even mentioned and it’s almost immediately swept back under the rug. Even so, I still love Ali as a character. She spent her first 14 years of life in a lab acting as a test subject for a woman who would easily top my list of most hated video game characters, only to become more curious about the world around her after interacting with the members of Class G (VC2s Protagonists), particularly Avan and Cosette (another excellent contender for this list). Eventually, she is abandoned by the scientist (did I mention I hate that woman and wish a painful death upon her) but joins Class G as a Scout, swearing to protect her new found family. Aliasse doesn’t understand many things about the world, but because of these, watching her learn new things like kicking a soccer ball is hilarious and seeing her develop a love for flowers and botany is adorable, though it’s nowhere near as prevalent in the overarching story as say Alicia’s love for baking.
